Govt announces plans to address blood shortage

Port-of-Spain: Health Minister Therese Baptiste-Cornelis today announced that the Government will purchase six mobile units that would go into communities, to get people to donate blood, as the health system struggles to address a shortage of blood for emergency situations.

The minister says the six units will arrive in the country within six months but she says there are plans in place in the short term to address the shortfall.

The North-Central Regional Health Authority has issued an appealing to eligible donors to give blood. It says there is a constant demand for blood products because of surgeries, care for cancer patients and other types of blood related emergencies.
