Government party denies links to Jamaat-al-Muslimeen

Port-of-Spain: The Congress of the People (COP) is denying claims made by Muslim fundamental group, the Jamaat-al-Muslimeen that the party had associated itself with the Jamaat in the last general election.

Senior Jamaat member, Jamal Shabazz. made the claim when he appeared before the Commission of Inquiry into the 1990 attempted coup. The COP is the second largest party in the ruling coalition People's Partnership government.

The party issued a statement today signed by its chairman Joseph Toney stating that the party since its existence, has had no association with the Jamaat-al-Muslimeen.

The COP says it wants to vehemently condemn the statements made yesterday at the Commission of Inquiry. It says the the COP regards these statements as vicious lies and calculated mischief aimed at hurting the image of the party.
