Giftland US$24M Megamall opens

openingGeorgetown: Giftland OfficeMax megamall on Thursday evening opened with a grand ribbon cutting ceremony, followed by a tour of the extraordinary facility and its surroundings. The event concluded with the screening of Hollywood’s blockbuster movie “Terminator: Genisys” at one of the Caribbean Cinemas’ theatres.

Giftland OfficeMax was started in 1997 when Monica Beepat’s small gift shop was combined with Roy Beepat’s wholesale stationery company and merged at one location on Regent and Albert Street. It moved from there to Charlotte Street in 2000 and then to Water Street in 2003. Giftland eventually outgrew its old location and thus, the Giftland Mall idea was born.

Delivering the keynote address during the ceremony at the mall’s Liliendaal, Greater Georgetown location was Business Minister Dominic Gaskin who proudly recognised the success of the Guyanese-owned company and its significant contribution towards the continued growth of the local economy. “Giftland’s growth has been attributed to many factors including attention to detail, strategic planning, customer service, sharp purchasing, great merchandising, staff incentive and development programmes, efficiency, innovative marketing and a desire to keep improving its product lines and service,” he acknowledged, noting that other budding businesses in the country could learn from the success and hard work of the Beepat Family.

Meanwhile, Prime Minister Moses Nagamootoo, who did the honours of cutting the red ribbons to officially declare the mall open to the public, delivered the feature address which aimed to capture the essence of Guyana’s first world-class entertainment complex. “I could not help but contain myself after having had a sneak preview with my wife to this wonderful complex … Roy Beepat deserves all our gratitude and all our support,” he said in congratulating the company.

Nagamootoo, who had previously dubbed the Giftland Mall as the single biggest innovation in Guyana in over 50 years, acknowledged how hard work and determination transformed a simple idea into a striking reality. In the same breath, he applauded the Beepat Family for its confidence and investment in the Guyanese economy.

Sincere gratitude

Meanwhile, the company’s President, Roy Beepat and Chief Executive Officer (CEO) Ian Ramdeo did the honours of expressing sincere gratitude to everyone who helped to make the mall a reality. Past and present Governments; Citizens Bank; the Guyana Bank for Trade and Industry (GBTI); Assuria; Rubis and Caribbean Cinemas among many others were recognised for their outstanding work in making the Giftland Mall a reality.

Of course, Giftland also expressed heartfelt gratitude to its hardworking staff for their industrious efforts in preparing for the opening of the grand entertainment complex.
