GECOM promises election results declaration in fastest time possible

Ballot BoxGeorgetown: The Guyana Elections Commission (GECOM) has promised to deliver elections results in the fastest time possible, even as the Commission Chairman Dr. Steve Surujbally cautions that the commission will not sacrifice accuracy for expediency.

Whilst addressing the launch of GECOM’s media centre today, Chief Elections Officer (CEO), Keith Lowenfield, promised that the commission will strive to ensure that the final declaration be made in the fastest possible time.  To facilitate this, and taking cognisance of the country’s geography, the CEO explained that GECOM had put measures in place to ensure that it will receive in the fast possible time, the returning Statements of Polls (SOPs) from the different districts, particularly those of the hinterland and far-flung areas.

Dr. Surujbally  did advise however, that the CEO was being optimistic, when he said that the commission would make a declaration in  the fastest possible time, and that though it has facilitated measures and will work towards this goal, it will not make a declaration, until all the SOPs have been collected and verified.

“I am saying Tuesday at the very best Wednesday,” Dr. Surujbally said, even as he urged the electorate to be patient. “Only GECOM has the legitimate right to make an announcement, and the electorate and the political parties must have patience. Nobody is here in the commission to concoct anything…I know that is the sort of nonsensical rumour that might traverse this country,” said Surujbally.
