GECOM chairman to Observe Mission for Haiti elections

images (1)Georgetown: Amid resounding calls for his resignation from thousands of Guyanese, the Guyana Elections Commission (GECOM) Chairman, Dr Steve Surujbally will be heading a Caricom Election Observation Mission in Haiti for the first round of the presidential elections and the second round of the legislative elections on October 25.

Based on reports, Surujbally’s delegation was scheduled to arrive in Haiti on October 21 and would be departing two to three days after the elections. The delegation comprises 11 members, including election officials from Caricom Member States and experienced election observers along with two representatives of the Caricom Secretariat who will assist with the administrative and logistical support.

According to Caricom, the fielding of the Mission was requested by Haiti’s Government following the presence of Caricom Election Observation Missions in St Kitts and Nevis, Guyana, Suriname, and Trinidad and Tobago.

In Haiti, 53 presidential candidates will be vying for the support of 5.8 million registered voters.

Meanwhile, on the heels of Surujbally’s departure to head the mission, there have been repeated calls by the People’s Progressive Party/Civic (PPP/C) for his resignation as Chairman of GECOM.
