GECOM chairman announced re-opening of claims and objection period – acted constitutionally

Georgetown : Chairman of the Guyana Elections Commission (GECOM) Dr. Steve Surujbally this afternoon announced the new round of Claims and Objections from July 25th and will run for 13 days.

Dr. Surujballi pointed out that Article 42 of the Guyana Constitution provides the conditions under which persons are entitled to be registered as citizens.

Article 159 (1) of the Guyana Constitution provides that no person shall vote at an election unless he is registered as an elector.

The National Registration Act, Chapter 19:08 provides for the conduct of new round of Claims and Objections, the government has assured that adequate funds would be available to conduct the exercise, the exercise could be conducted in a timeframe which does not push the elections beyond the constitutional due date, and undertaking a new round of Claims and objections would provide a window of opportunity for bona fide citizens to become registered and be guaranteed their constitutional right to vote, it would only be logical and correct to conclude that GECOM should commence a new Claims and Objections exercise.

Accordingly, a majority decision was taken at a Special Statutory Commission Meeting, which was held immediately preceding this media conference, that there will be a new round of Claims and Objections.

The Chairman calls on all of the electors who are now in possession of their source documents to make every effort to become registered during the new round of Claims and Objections that we will begin on July 25th and invite all Political Parties to make full use of this opportunity to enthuse their constituents to get registered during the exercise.
