GDF Chief receives Brazilian peacemaker medal

MEDALGeorgetown: The Office of the Brazilian Defence, Naval and Army Attaché commemorated the Brazilian Army’s Soldier Day at the Grand Coastal Hotel on the East Coast of Demerara recently during which Guyana Defence Force Chief-of-Staff, Brigadier Mark Phillips was presented with the Pacificador (Peacemaker) Medal.

The Pacificador Medal was created as a result of Regulation No 345 of August 25, 1953, as an evocation to the homage paid to Luiz Alves De Lima E Silva, the Duke of Caxias, on the occasion of the 600th anniversary of his birth. The Government of the Republic, in 1954, authorised the use of this decoration on military uniforms.

According to a GDF statement from 1955, it was transformed in honour to be conferred to military and civilian personnel, Brazilians and foreigners, whom have rendered notable service to the Army, elevating the prestige of the institution or the development of the relations of friendship between the Brazilian Army and other nations.

In 1962, a new decoration of honour was added, the Pacificador Medal with the Palm, to reward Brazilian Military, who, in times of peace, have distinguished themselves by personal acts of unselfishness, courage and bravery, at the risk of life. Among the invitees were His Excellency, the Ambassador of the Federative Republic of Brazil to Guyana, Lineu Pupo de Paula; Minister Sabine Nadja Popoff; the families of the Brazilian officers serving in Guyana; members of the Diplomatic Community, Officers of the Guyana Defence Force, and a few distinguished guests.
