GCSM, Cuban Embassy celebrates Castro’s birth anniversary

Halim-KhanGeorgetown: The Embassy of Cuba in Guyana will be celebrating the 89th birth anniversary of Fidel Castro today (August, 13, 2015). Castro is celebrated as a revolutionist who was Cuba’s prime minister and first secretary of the Communist party of Cuba. Invitees include members of the Guyana Cuba Solidarity Movement (GCSM), Cuban residents and members of the Cuban State Mission in Guyana. The event is being hosted by Cuban Ambassador to Guyana, Julio Gonzalez Marchante. President of the Guyana Cuba Solidarity Movement (GCSM) Haleem Khan said Castro who was a lawyer by training led the Cuban Revolution and transformed the island into the first communist state in the Western Hemisphere. “In Cuba a photo exhibit, a camping day and a concert are included in the number of activities of the Cuban young people who will celebrate the 89th birthday of the historical leader of the Cuban Revolution…There's no evidence that Castro's health is in immediate danger, though his advancing age is evident in the images published through official channels…” Khan underscored. He explained that Castro retired for good in 2008 following a near-fatal illness, ceding power to his younger brother and designated successor, Raúl, who turned 83 in June. The younger Castro says he intends to leave office by the time his current term is up in 2018, he named a next-generation heir-apparent in First Vice President Miguel Díaz-Canel. Castro rarely appears in public these days, and in recent years has not taken part in official celebrations of his birthday. Meanwhile, Khan said the president of Bolivia, Evo Morales, arrived in Cuba on Wednesday night to participate in the events by the 89 birthday of the leader of the Cuban Revolution, Fidel Castro. A day after Fidel turns 89, the United States and Cuba will make another move along the road to civility when US Secretary of State John Kerry officially opens the US Embassy in the heart of the capital. It will balance the Fidel Castrodiplomatic scale, following Cuba's opening of its embassy in the US political capital of Washington, DC in July. Fidel Alejandro Castro Ruz was born on August 13, 1926 (though some say he was born a year later), near Birán, in Cuba's eastern Oriente Province. Fidel Castro was the third of six children, including his two brothers, Raul and Ramon; and three sisters, Angelita, Emma and Augustina. His father, Angel, was a wealthy sugar plantation owner originally from Spain. His mother, Lina Ruz Gonzalez, had been a maid to Angel's first wife, Maria Luisa Argota, at the time of Fidel's birth. By the time Fidel was 15, his father dissolved his first marriage and wed Fidel's mother. At age 17, Fidel was formally recognized by his father and his name was changed from Ruz to Castro. Educated in private Jesuit boarding schools, Castro grew up in wealthy circumstances amid the poverty of Cuba's people. He was intellectually gifted, but more interested in sports than studies. He attended El Colegio de Belen and pitched for the school's baseball team. After his graduation in late 1945, Castro entered law school at the University of Havana and became immersed in the political climate of Cuban nationalism, anti-imperialism and socialism.
