Essequibo: The police force has partnered up with both government and non-governmental organizations in an effort to put a curb on crime on the Essequibo Coast (G Division).

Commander of the division Senior Superintendent Stephen Mansell believes that the best way to control crime is to establish solid trust with the public.

“We need to establish a good relationship with our communities at the same time we need to make sure that school leavers are employed, we need to keep them occupied meaningfully,” the commander said.

Adding that the police force would thus partner with the private and public sector on the 17th of June 2017, to launch its first ever Career Day Fair, Commander Mansell said the force is hoping to bestow a measure of optimism upon youths by hosting the upcoming fair.

The Senior Superintendent promises that that Career Day Fair would be a mind blowing experience for youths.  Mansell said the fair would be formal with a structured program starting from 10:00 hrs until 18:00 hrs which would be formally opened by the commissioner of police.

“We are asking various sectors to open a boot to display their goods and services, we expect businesses to advertise their job vacancies along with criteria for employment,” he explained “ We are targeting unemployment here, they may be persons out there who don’t know where there’s an existing vacancy, and this fair could mean hope for them.”

Mansell reiterated that the partnership between the police force and the public sector would also serve as a crime prevention strategy, “less job automatically means more crime, however from Monday we would have banners advertising the career day, also we would be visiting schools directly to interact with youths, Liaising on with the department of education.”

Regional representative Basil Persaud stressed that unemployment may be on the increase due to increase in technology.

The police force through its partnership with the Private and public sector is on its way of constructing a multipurpose training center that is expecting to include a section for Information Technology.

The Commander said that the force has already being engaging some 200 youths in four different communities, “ we can say that the tree we planted has taken root and is bearing fruits, the youths in Dartmouth are benefitting well from the training they receive on Sundays, especially in IT. We are hoping to bring charity on board very soon since there’s a Hub there as well.”
