Former GBTI head tipped as new GT&T Boss

Georgetown: Current Project Manager of the National Competitive Secretariat, R.K Sharma is tipped to be the new Chief Executive Officer of Guyana Telephone and Telegraph Company (GT&T.)

Sharma who was also the Former Head of Guyana Bank for Trade & Industry Limited (GBTI) was amongst the top candidates interviewed by the company’s directorate recently.  Sharma will replace former CEO of GT&T Yog Mahadeo who resigned earlier this year. The current acting CEO of GT&T is Joe Singh who works along with Sonita Jagan in executing the company’s business. Sharma holds a Masters of Commerce Degree (Capital Markets and Finance) from the Punjab University, India.

During his tenure, Sharma has overseen the growth of the Bank, which in 2008 recorded net profit of $941 million and boasted total assets of $49.3 billion. The Bank has a 21 per cent share of total commercial bank assets among the six banks in the country.

In 1997, he moved to GBTI and was appointed Chief Executive Officer in June, 2000. Sharma is the current Chairman of the Guyana Association of Bankers.
