Flood havoc across Trinidad

Caroni: The Meteorological Office says several areas of the country along the banks of the Caroni river are still under water, following two days of persistent rainfall.

The met office says the water levels in the river are falling and there is no fear that it will over flow onto the south bound lane of the Uriah Butler Highway.

Residents from Valsayn, Bamboo Numbers One and Two, El Carmen and Spring Village continue to count their losses.

Water rising as much as four and five feet in some instances flooded homes causing severe damage. Many home owners lost appliances and clean up operations have been hampered because of the slow pace at which the water has been receding.
 
The Tunapuna Piarco Regional Corporation has opened the Eastern Indoor Sporting Complex to provide temporary emergency shelter for persons displaced by recent floods. The shelter is being managed by the Red Cross.

Several areas under flood waters still continue to receive attention from the office of disaster preparedness.

These include Freeman Road, St Augustine South, Nabbie Street, Temple Street and others in Bamboo Number 2, El Carmen , St Helena and Santa Monica, Spring Village and Spring Lands Valsayn South.

Several residents have had to be relocated and sandbags as well as mattressesd have been distribited to those in need.
