Five Grenadian Police Officers charged with manslaughter of Canadian resident

Grenada: According to reports in the Grenada Broadcast and the Antigua Observer, Police Constables (PC) 748 Kenton HAZZARD, (PC) 237 Ruddy FELIX and Rural Constable (RC) Wendell SYLVESTER attached to St. David Police Station and Police Constables 649 Edward GIBSON and 675 Shaun GANNESS attached to the Traffic and Transport Department, St. George’s are all jointly charged with manslaughter in the death of 39-year-old Grenadian born Oscar Bartholomew.

An eyewitness, who was a detainee at the St. David’s Police Station, told investigators Friday he saw five police officers beating Bartholomew on Boxing Day. The police officers had allegedly beaten Bartholomew while he was in police custody after he was arrested following an incident in which he apparently mistook a female police officer for an old friend.

The Canadian resident, who was visiting family in Grenada, went into a coma and died at the General Hospital. A post mortem later revealed that he died from punctured organs, a fractured skull and bleeding from the head. Bartholomew’s family is seeking a second post mortem which they say is needed to assist them to pursue the matter in civil court.

The five police officers will appear before the St. George’s #1 Magistrate Court on Tuesday January 3, 2012 at 09:00hrs as police continue investigations.
