Fifty workers laid off

C.O. Williams Construction Limited one of the leading construction firms in Barbados have laid off fifty workers.  .

The employees who were placed on the breadline today, included truck drivers, general workers and some from the workshop.

 Late last month executive chairman of the company, Sir Charles Williams had told the media there will be no layoffs at the company once there is work.

At that time Sir Charles was responing to a newspaper report that his company had intended to laid off workers from its 600 strong payroll becacuse of a down turn in business

“The only comment that I am going to give you is that we are not laying off anybody, providing we have work –  private, Government or whatever. What we want is work,” said Sir Charles.

 General Manager of the company Neil Weekes acknowledged the laying off of the workers, but noted that any further terminations would be a last resort. Weekes revealed that his company was now in consultation with the Ministry of Transport and Works with the intention of securing new construction contracts.
