Fiery blaze kills children in house

fireGeorgetown: Police disclosed sunday said that investigations are being conducted into a fire that occurred at about 04: 30h Sunday at Lot 71 Pollydore Drive which resulted in the deaths of Adam Marshall, 11 years; and Shania Marshall, 8 years.

Their mother Odessa Thomas, 36 years, and a thirteen-year-old brother suffered burns to their hands and are being treated at the GPHC, the police said.

Fire Chief Gentle said the fire service was able to contain the blaze to just the one house and save nearby buildings from damages.

At approximately 04: 00h neighbours recalled hearing a little girl screaming for her mother as the woman attempted to enter the already burning house.

Neighbour recalled that Thomas,  who sells at the slaughter house was coming home in the early hours of the morning when she saw the house on fire.

The two  children who died were apparently sleeping at the time the fire started. Neighbours said that the children were physically small and in the smoke and confusion may have been unable to lift the door bar to exit. The large windows located at the front of the house were grilled.

One resident in the area said that fire crews responded within 15 minutes, but it was too late. “They found the little boy by the door like he was trying to get out there…we all heard the little girl screaming ‘mommy, mommy’ the house was already gone you couldn’t go in there it. She was just screaming in there.”

He said that the children being home alone was a normal occurrence.
