ERC discharging its constitutional role – Luncheon

Georgetown -The recent pronouncement by the Ethnic Relations Commission (ERC) on comments made by President Bharrat Jagdeo at Babu John came as no surprise to Head of the Presidential Secretariat Dr. Roger Luncheon who believes that it is a representation of the commission discharging its constitutional function.

Dr. Luncheon was responding to questions from members of the press at a post Cabinet media briefing today about the Commission’s recent description of President Jagdeo’s statements.

“We have to recognize that the Ethnic Relations Commission has a constitutional role to discharge and notwithstanding the likes and dislikes of the various segments of the Guyanese population we can say that the Ethnic Relations Commission is… discharging its roles and responsibilities,” Dr Luncheon said.

Despite acknowledging the duty of the Commission, Dr. Luncheon had some reservations about the context in which the commission interpreted the President’s remarks in its appraisal.

He said the ERC was incognizant of the audience to which the President was addressing, noting that while it was made at

Babu John it catered to all Guyanese including the supporters of the People’s National Congress Reform (PNC/R).
