Election for Deputy Speaker on hold until as Opposition still to nominate candidate

Georgetown : The opposition People Progressive Party Civic (PPP/C) today made their first appearance in the National Assembly after the 2015 Regional and General Elections.

Thought they were absent from the past six sittings of the house, the PPP was today still unprepared to name a nominee for the position of Deputy Speaker. Due to the party's no show over the past two and a half months the position of Deputy Speaker has been left vacant.

At the opening of the Seventh Sitting of the National Assembly today, PPPC’s Chief Whip and Member of Parliament Gail Teixeira, announced that there is no nomination from the party to fill the position.

As a result, Speaker of the National Assembly, Dr. Barton indicated that the election of Deputy Speaker of the National Assembly will be held at the next sitting of the Assembly.

The post of Deputy Speaker is traditionally filled by a nominee selected by the parliamentary opposition.
