 St. John's, Antigua

A 63-year-old Jamaican who pleaded guilty to cannabis possession was sentenced when he appeared in the High Court before Justice Keith Thom yesterday.

According to reports, police officers executed a search warrant at Maxi’s Apartment at about 1 pm on May 8, 2010, and following the discovery of 123 lbs of marijuana, Errol Martin was arrested and charged.

Further reports indicated that the offender denied having keys to enter the apartment, but a search carried out on his person yielded two keys.

On entering the section he occupied, the officers found EC$17,090 and US$123 beside his passport. When questioned about the cash, he allegedly said, “Maybe it belong to me or me cousin.”

Lawmen also found, two bags containing marijuana were found in the living room, while another was found on top of the refrigerator with a quantity of the substance.

Additionally, two locked cupboards were also forced opened, and marijuana wrapped in brown masking tape was found inside, as well as concealed in a refrigerator.

The Jamaican, who has been in custody since May 2010, was sentenced to time served.

He is also expected to return to his native land on Sunday. Of the monies found in his possession, $11,090 will go to the Treasury, and the subtracted portion will be used to purchase his airline ticket and take care of expenses he incurred while incarcerated.
