Eight-hour power outtage cripples northern Trinidad

Port-of-Spain: Thousands across northern Trinidad were this morning affected by a massive electricity blackout that lasted in some cases as long as eight hours.

State-owned electricity company TTEC says the blackout was as a result of a problem with an overhead busbar at Powergen's Point Lisas Facility on Sunday.

TTEC's Corporate Communications Manager Anabelle Brasnell says that as a result TTEC was forced to shed load to allow Powergen to fix the problem.

This load shedding started around one this morning in several places in northern Trinidad.

These areas included Belmont, Diego Martin, St Augustine, Maraval, Westmoorings, Morvant, Barataria and Trincity which were serviced by TTEC's north and east distribution areas.

TTEC says the problem was rectified around 7.45 am allowing them to begin to restablish supply to customers who were affected by the cut in electricity.
