East Bank hire car drivers increase fare by $100

Berbice. Public transport operators working along the East Bank Berbice route have jacked up their fare following last Wednesday’s traffic jam. They are contending that the bad road is damaging their vehicles, and this is the reason for the increase.
The fare is now $200 instead of $100. The drivers explained that the many pot holes on the road are causing much damage to their casr, and their operational cost has increased. For areas beyond Edinburg, the fare was usually $160 but since last Wednesday’s incident, drivers are demanding. School aged children are forced to pay an extra $20. Many commuters revealed that they are forced to pay the increase because it is the only way to traverse the area, and the option of a private taxi is at least $1500. One operator told TrakkerNews that he charges the same fare up to Edinburg, but asks for $200 and $120 for adults and children respectively if they want to go further. Since Wednesday last, the RDC has embarked on repairs which have seen some of the huge holes on the road filled with gravel. The work is ongoing.
