Georgetown : In the first half of the year, the Government of Guyana spent $450.6M for the completion of works under the E-Governance Project. This is according to the mid-year report released on August 9 by Minister of Finance, Dr. Ashni Singh.
The report stated that civil works have been completed at all of the 54 LTE-A sites. Commissioning, which is expected by the end of the third quarter, is pending the completion of power conversion to be done by Guyana Power and Light (GPL) Inc.
GPL’s frequency conversion project commenced in February, and is aimed at reducing technical losses that are caused by old converters.
Meanwhile, under the One Laptop Per Family Project (OLPF), a total of 4,254 laptops were distributed in the first half of the year in Regions Two, Three, Four, Five, and Six. It is anticipated that an additional 10,012 laptops will be distributed by the end of 2014.
In terms of taking information communication technology (ICT) to schools across the country, works are on schedule to complete the equipping of the three remaining secondary schools with computer laboratories before the end of 2014.
The US $32M E-Governance project will see the installation of infrastructure networks inclusive of fibre-optic cables and twin tracks that will realise high speed delivery of e-Government content and internet.
This project was designed using fibre optic and LTE which would enable high capacity data usage and will have state-of-the-art security measures to protect sensitive information.
This project will complement Guyana’s revolutionary OLPF project, which is the most significant transformational, social and economic development programme ever undertaken in Guyana and the Caribbean
The aim of the robust ICT drive is to ensure a computer literate population, a more competent and competitive workforce, and accelerated investments in the ICT sector as a source of rapid job creation in Guyana.
