Georgetown: A drug crazed man armed with cutlasses went berserk killing his reputed wife, child and severely injuring his mother in the wee hours of Friday morning at their Lot 57, Best Village West Coast Demerara (WCD) home. The rampage continued when the man ran into a house on Samaroo Dam, Pouderoyen, West Bank Demerara chopping a man about the body.
Dead are 34-year-old Vanessa Sukhram Persaud, her 2-year-old son Joel Ganesh. His mother, 49-year-old Jennifer Montassar was taken to the West Demerara Regional Hospital before being transferred to Georgetown Public Hospital where she is listed as critical. The bodies were removed and taken to Ezekiel Funeral Home. The killer, a fisherman and part-time construction worker, was identified as 28-year-old Suresh Ganesh called “Battery” or “Tarzan.”
Divisional Commander Senior Superintendent Stephen Mansell said that the police immediately responded and cordoned off the crime scene. Police then began the hunt for the perpetrator in the wee hours of the morning.
He said the police in hot pursuit caught up with the suspect in Samaroo Dam where they were met with resistance, after the perpetrator chopped another man about the body. The commander noted that the “drug addict” violently attacked the police and the law enforcement officers defended themselves by shooting the suspect on his foot and on the left hand. He said the suspect is in police custody and the relevant charges are expected to be implemented next week.
Sukhram-Persaud, a mother of two was found on a blood soaked mattress with her neck almost severed, a chop to her jaw, arms and fingers. Her son was found lying next to her with his intestines protruding out of his abdomen. The perpetrator severed part of his mother’s arms chopping her about the body.
Ganesh’s brother disclosed that he fled the scene and barely managed to escape the chopping.
However, the suspect’s step-father, Ronald Williams disclosed that his wife took some bread over to give Ganesh to eat while he was assisting in the kitchen to make some tea. He explained that while he was in the kitchen he heard his wife screaming, upon checking he saw his stepson chopping his mother.
During the confusion in trying to assist the injured woman, he said the perpetrator managed to escape after committing the heinous act. Williams said the horror registered when he realized that Ganesh had killed his wife and child minutes after returning home to a building adjacent to theirs.
According to investigators, Suresh Ganesh told police that his wife was unfaithful and he was stressed out since he was unemployed and not getting any jobs. Investigators in explaining the scenario said the perpetrator was quarrelling with his wife about not having anything to eat and he was hungry. His mother, 
Jennifer Montassar overheard and decided to take a piece of bread over to her son who was living in a hut behind their property. As she was proceeding towards her son who was standing outside with a cutlass in his hand, she was greeted with chops as she handed over the piece of bread. She then dropped the bread and run towards her home nearby. He then continued to chop his mother about the body. His stepfather, Ronald Williams, heard the screaming and ventured outside and saw his wife running towards the door and they both locked the attacker out. Minutes after, the family heard the sounds of screams and chops, then the area went silent. At 4:00hrs the mother, stepfather and a brother then ventured outside to investigate what had occurred, they were then greeted by Ganesh who they thought had left the area. Ganesh then attacked his mother once again chopping her, the stepfather and brother then fled the scene seeking refuge in nearby bushed. His mother managed to also run away. After the gruesome act, Ganesh then ran into Samaroo Dam, Pouderoyen, West Bank Demerara where he ran into a woman’s yard breathless telling her he was being chased. A neighbour of the woman, came to her rescue after the man ran into her home chopping up things inside the home. The police subsequently arrive, when Ganesh saw this he decided to chop the neighbour who gave assistance and proceeded to attack the police. He was shot twice and subdued.
