Decomposed body found in abandoned house

Antigua:Police are probing the circumstances surrounding the death of a man whose body was found in an abandoned house on Warner Road in the Fort area.

The man, said to be in his 40s and identified only by an alias, appeared to have been dead for several days as decomposition was at a relatively advanced stage.

One resident said neighbours reported a foul odour in the area since Saturday, but dismissed it as that of an animal.

But at around 9 am yesterday, a young man went to relieve himself near the abandoned house when he saw the body, fully clothed, lying on the floor.

A cellular phone was ringing beside it.

“I went and viewed the whole thing and called 911 because my brother, who saw it first, was scared. I live right beside the house and didn’t see any activity there for a long time. The house is abandoned. It has no windows and no doors so we find it strange to see the body in there,” one witness said.

The body was on the ground in the living room area, in a corner left of the front entrance.

Police have not ruled out foul play and are awaiting a post mortem to determine cause of death.

The deceased reportedly did odd jobs – cleaning yards, cutting grass and minor plumbing for residents in the area.
