Georgetown: Head of State, Donald Ramotar on Friday congratulated the country’s students for their outstanding performance at this year’s Caribbean Examinations Council Examinations (CSEC) and Caribbean Advanced Proficiency Examination (CAPE).
“I want to congratulate the students who wrote the examination. The results this year were much better than many years ago. For a while now, it shows that our investment is paying off; we have the challenge of building on it, sustaining it, and improving much more.”
The President also applauded the teachers, parents and every other stakeholder who contributed in some way or the other.
“It’s interesting to note that the passes have been spread out right across the country; they represent every region of Guyana, and that is something that was unheard of 20 years ago when only Georgetown excelled. No longer will parents have to sacrifice to send their children out of region.”
The President however, called on those in the education sector not to become complacent as there is still room for improvement.
The CAPE preliminary results have reflected a slight decrease in pass rate, but on the other hand, an increase was noted in the Grades 3 to 5 performances.
Of the 798 students who sat the examination this year, the overall pass rate was 85.07 percent compared to the 86.6 percent attained in 2013. Cecil Cox and Deowattie Narine, both of Queen’s College, were top performers, securing Grade One passes in seven units.
Other outstanding performers include from Queen’s College, Andy Sattan, Prashant Shivdas, Kaleshwar Singh and Benedict Sukra, who each secured Grade One in six units and Grade Two in one unit.
Also from Queen’s College Akeila Whitshire secured 5 Grade Ones and 1 Grade Two, whilst Sasha Woodroofe secured 5 Grade Ones.
Rounding off the top 10 performers are Chaitram Mohammed and Karran Singh from St Rose’s High.
Elisa Hamilton of Queen’s College, is this year’s top CSEC performer, while Bharti Bhoge of Skeldon Line Path Secondary, Region Six and Larissa Whiltshire of Queen’s College, shared the second place with 17 Grade Ones.
Third place position went to Tressyia Ketwaroo of Skeldon Line Path Secondary and Lisa John of Queen’s College who both secured 16 Grade Ones and one Grade Two, each.
