Crisis looms as Canal Polder flooding continues

Georgetown: Canals # 1 and 2 Polders on the West Bank of Demerara have been swamped by flood water for weeks, resident said.

According to residents, the situation is now on the verge of becoming a full blown crisis with losses beginning to mount for farmers and residents.

Late last year, Minister of State Joseph Harmon visited some of the affected areas as he handed out cleaning supplies.

However, the residents are claiming that their plight has been largely ignored, especially since there is little they can do with cleaning supplies when their homes are still under flood water.

Opposition Member of Parliament Anil Nandlall has also pointed out that the prolonged flooding is as a result of the government’s decision to close the Wales sugar Estate.

He has contended that crucial waterways have been left unattended and the end result is unfolding currently as it is proving difficult to drain the areas affected.

Apart from their homes, livestock are continuing to perish and farmlands swamped amounting to millions of dollars in losses for the residents.
