Criminal Assizes commence with 63 backlog reduction

Criminal-JusticeGeorgetown: With a backlog of over a hundred criminal cases, the figure has been reduced by 63 after the Director of Public Prosecution (DPP) Chambers disposed of them.

This is according to a report issued on the assizes review of the three counties. In Demerara, the June Criminal Assizes ended on October 1 and saw a total of 49 cases disposed, but only 31 had engaged the court’s attention.

The Demerara October Criminal Assizes will commence today with a total of 226 cases listed to be heard by Justice Singh, Justice Reynolds and Justice Gregory, while the Berbice Criminal Assizes is set to open on October 21, with 52 cases.

Justice James Bovell-Drakes will be presiding. The Essequibo Criminal Assizes is schedule to start on October 28 with 19 cases to be heard before Justice Holder.
