Credit Unions may establish a bank

Bridgetown.

The Barbados Cooperative & Credit Union League Limited has commissioned former Governor of the Central Bank Sir Courtney Blackman to conduct a feasibility study on the establishment of a bank.

President of the Cooperative & Credit Union League Limited says Sir Courtney was expected to hand over a draft of the study on April 15.

The bank is expected to fill the void created by the absence of a Barbadian owned bank and provide services to the public that are not availble through the credit unions.

"We have considerable deposits scattered across Barbados in various banks and since there is no locally owned and operated bank, it presents an opportunity for the credit union movement to seek to establish a cooperative bank for credit unions and Barbadians living in Barbados and aboard", Haynes said.
