Community Radio Stations for Mabaruma and Lethem

Georgetown : Two new community radio stations will soon to be established. One will be in Mabaruma Region One and the other in Lethem, Region Nine. This comes as the administration moves to bridge the communication gap between hinterland and coastal Guyana.

 

This was disclosed by Prime Minister Moses Nagamootoo, last evening in the National Assembly as he rose to defend the 2016 current and capital expenditure for the Office of the Prime Minister. The examination of the estimates commenced today in the Committee of Supply in the National Assembly.

 

Prime Minister Nagamootoo who holds ministerial responsibility for the public information and communication sector, explained that the two community radio stations will boost Radio Paiwomak which serves mainly communities in  the  Rupununi.

 

The Prime Minister was questioned by opposition member and former junior Finance Minister Bishop Juan Edghill as to the functionality and status of the $23M uplink facility based at the headquarters of the National Communications Network (NCN), Homestretch Avenue.

 

Prime Minister Nagamootoo reported that additional monies have been budgeted for the full installation and activation of the facility adding that the supporting infrastructure will be put in place and will be linked to the central NCN radio location to provide nationwide coverage soon.

 

Currently, Radio Paiwomak is Guyana’s only community radio station broadcasting in the  Rupununi. It serves over 65 Indigenous communities. The radio station is the first Indigenous community radio station operating in Guyana. It is located at the Bina Hill Institute, Annai, Region Nine.  Most of the broadcast is done in native Amerindian language.

 

The office of the Prime Minister was allocated the sum of $657,457,000 to implement its current and capital work programme for 2016 was approved this.
