Officials from the Ministry of Communities and contractors at the signing

Georgetown: The Ministry of Communities Friday signed a total of six contracts with a cost in excess of $107M. These contracts are being undertaken in keeping with our mission to build, cohesive, empowered and sustainable communities and the vision to improve infrastructure, ensure proper sanitation management and promote Guyana’s green agenda through the creation of green spaces.

These contracts fall under the following categories:

  1. Green Agenda
  2. Community Infrastructure Program
  3. Sanitation Management

Green Spaces

Three of the six contracts are for the construction of green open spaces; one of which will be constructed at No. 76 Village Corentyne, (East Corentyne/Berbice).

The other two are for the construction of the Lethem Declaration Park (Upper Takutu/Upper Essequibo) and the construction of Sparta Recreational Park, Anna Regina (Pomeroon/Supenaam)

The Ministry’s aim is to create Green Open Spaces that filter pollutants and dust from the air, provide shade and lower temperatures in urban areas, and reduce erosion of soil into our waterways.

This is being done with a view to providing an environment for safe recreational activities while fostering community cohesion.

The facilities include parks or community centres and will feature green construction, green energy and greenery.

The green space initiative is being undertaken through a commitment by the Government of Guyana, under the Green State Development Strategy to develop a green economy.

This will ensure the sustainable management of natural resources. The aim is also to balance economic growth with the preservation of the country's environmental treasures for generations to come.

The scope of each green space consists of: construction of sanitary facilities, benabs, benches, walkways; landscaping; and the setting up of solar systems for lighting and power outlets.

These green parks and boulevards will encourage safe social activities, improve the aesthetics of the towns, promote community development and can be used for the purpose of revenue generation within the townships.

The declaration park in Upper Takutu-Upper Essequibo will be part of the commemoration of Lethem as a new town.

Marketing Centre

The Ministry of Communities has committed to rehabilitating the existing marketing centre at Kumaka, Mabaruma. This will enhance the delivery of services by the town council and also result in revenue generation with the rental of bond spaces. This will ultimately improve the access of the council to much-needed financial resources as well as provide adequate storage facilities for vendors.

The rehabilitation of the marketing facility will include of roofing, sanitation facility, painting and partition walls.

Hydrogeological and Geotechnical Investigations at Proposed Landfill Sites (Anna Regina, Mabaruma & Port Kaituma)

The Sanitation Management Unit of the Ministry of Communities has as part of its agenda to ensure the management of waste in a structured environment that does not endanger the health of the population.

The Ministry of Communities will be constructing new sanitary landfills at Anna Regina, Mabaruma and Port Kaituma. The Ministry has already identified the proposed sites.

This consultancy involves soil investigation at these locations. The hydro-geological data will be used to assess the suitability of the location identified for the landfill.

The geotechnical data will be used to analyze the stability of the landfill including its settlement and slope stability.

This site investigation is aimed at the acquisition of both geotechnical and hydro-geological data for the site. Samples will be recovered during this investigation for confirmatory tests to determine both geotechnical and hydro-geological parameters.

The investigation for the landfill site will provide sufficient information regarding the hydrogeologic conditions at the site to allow a reasonable determination of the usefulness of the site for development as a landfill.
