Coco production, byproducts to advance in Hosororo Region One

Minister Baksh and Dr. Homenauth inspects the Coco NurseryGeorgetown: Government has continued to lend support to further strengthen agricultural development and enhance livelihood especially in rural communities. One such avenue, is the development of coco and its byproducts.

The Blue Flame Women’s Group of Hosororo, Region One has been embarking on one such venture at the community level and will soon benefit from enhanced training, farm preparation and access to requisite market opportunities for their products. .

Minister within the Ministry of Agriculture, Hon. Ali Baksh accompanied by Chief Executive Officer, National Agricultural Research and Extension Institute (NAREI), Dr. Oudho Homenauth and technical officers recently visited the Group’s farm where they were given a tour of the operation.

During the visit, the need for technical support through research and development was outlined, as the group solicited the support of the Ministry.

Minister Baksh gave government’s commitment to ensure that the necessary technical support, such as training and farm preparation is given.

“Government has been pushing for the advancement of agricultural products and has been working over the years to ensure that agricultural groups especially in the hinterland receive support to expand…I am impress with the operation and potential of this groups and will assist in whatever way we can,” he said.

The group which started operation in 2010, have been lacking in the area of farm maintenance which has significantly affected their operation. Minister Baksh committed to give assistance in this area and technical officer from NAREI will be working closely with the Group to provide training where necessary.

“This area will see the staff of NAREI providing training on how to properly set seedlings, and how to transplant and the pruning of trees…you have identified your existing shortfall and Government si committed to working with you to ensure the situation is rectified,” Minister Baksh told the group.

NAREI will also collaborate with the Blue Flame Group to access regional and international markets for their products.

The Government remains committed to the promotion of non-traditional agriculture crop which shows tremendous potential for expansion and has been providing assistance to farmers to ensure their development.
