CNS TV may soon be out of business- directors summoned to meet with President

Georgetown : President Bharrat Jagdeo who has responsibility for broadcasting (Minister of Information) has summoned the directors of CNS TV 6 Chandra Narine and Savitree Sharma to a meeting at 3pm tomorrow on the breach of their license.

The Sharmas along with Anthony Vieira were sued $50M for statements made by Vieira on May 4th about Bishop Juan Edghill, Chairman of the Ethnic relations Commission. The matter was reported to the Advisory Commission on Broadcasting (ACB), a body the main opposition and Sharma lawyers say is unconstitutional. The ACB was set up in 2000 and constitutes three people, a member from government, the main opposition party and the private sector.

According to the PNC/R their member Ron Case has resigned in 2003 and no one has since replaced his position, hence the body cannot make any recommendations.

The ACB’s Chairman and the ruling PPP member Evan Persaud had recommended to President Bharrat Jagdeo to suspend Sharma TV license for 6 months.

Sharma had since filed injunctions in the High Court restraining the ACB and the President to suspend his license.

Sharma License has been suspended on three occasions by President Jagdeo over the past 10 years, the first time for a day, the second for a month and the third for four months.

On June 7th CNS TV 6 celebrated 19 years in the television business.
