Chinese Ambassador pays courtesy call on AG

DSCN0030Georgetown: Minister of Legal Affairs and Attorney General (AG) Basil Williams received the People’s Republic of China Ambassador to Guyana His Excellency Zhang Limin at the Attorney General Chambers.

The Chinese Ambassador paid the courtesy call to congratulate the Attorney General on his appointment as Minister of Legal Affairs. The discussions focused on the long standing diplomatic relationship of over four decades between Guyana and China with Ambassador Limin pledging his country’s continued support towards Guyana’s development while offering support to the Ministry of Legal Affairs in areas of training and strengthening of the judiciary.

The Attorney General thanked the ambassador for his country’s offer and disclosed that he was aware of the long standing relationship which Guyana has with China, as he himself was a member of the Guyana China Friendship Society in its early years. Williams attributed the countries’ cordial relationship to the vision of the founder of the People’s National Congress (PNC) and Guyana’s first Executive President Forbes Burnham whose decision to establish diplomatic relations with China came under heavy criticism during the1970’s and pointed out that China’s growth on the world stage as an Economic Power vindicates Forbes Burnham. 

The Chinese Ambassador pointed out that even when the PNC was in opposition China’s cordial relations with the party always remained intact. Observing that Guyana is a beautiful country which offered many opportunities for both countries continued development, even as he cited the many Chinese businesses currently operating in Guyana. With the finding of oil by Exxon Mobil Guyana is also set for rapid development the Ambassador observed.
