Chief of Staff given 14 days to reply to lawsuit

Gary BestGeorgetown: Chief-of Staff Commodore Gary Best has two weeks to respond to a lawsuit pertaining to the non-payment of bonuses to four officer of the Guyana Defence Force (GDF.)

Over 100 soldiers were affected after the chief of staff had taken a position subsequent to the President’s announcement, to withhold the bonus of soldiers who had disciplinary action taken against them in 2012. The plaintiffs are; Captain Rono Joseph; Major (ag) Lesley Ramlall; Captain Harold Fraser and Coast Guard Lieutenant André Cush.  Attorney-at-law Abiola Wong-Inniss will be representing the team.

Today, State prosecutor Pritima Kissoon made the 14-day request on behalf of Commodore Best before Chief Justice Ian Chang. The Chief of Staff did not attend the proceedings; however, a court date has been set for April 2, 2013.

The officers charged that the Chief of Staff acted unlawful, unreasonable, and unfair to withhold their bonuses.
