Cattle owners urged to better supervise their animals – Home Ministry

Georgetown : The Ministry of Home Affairs is urging cattle owners to take supervision of their animals so as to prevent fatal or serious accidents, and the eventual reduction to their herd or the animals being strayed away.

In a recent report issued by the Ministry, as of March 31, 2013 a total of 603 animals were taken in possession by the Georgetown and Berbice stray catchers’ units for the first quarter of 2013.

During April, the Georgetown Unit further impounded a total of 239 animals comprising 103 cows, 96 goats, four horses and 36 sheep.  The Berbice Unit impounded a total of 401 animals comprising 313 cows, 49 goats, three horses and 36 sheep.

Since the inception of the Georgetown Unit on March 29, 2011, it has impounded a total of 2230 animals comprising 76 asses, 1060 cows, 649 goats, 49 horses and 396 sheep.

The Berbice Unit since its inception on July 27, 2012, impounded a total of 2299 animals comprising 1301 cows, 323 goats, 425 horses and 250 sheep.

Thus far, the total number of animals impounded is 4529 comprising 76 asses, 2361 cows, 972 goats, 474 horses and 646 sheep.
