CARICOM-Cuba Day confab to underscore Economic, Trade Relations in Havana – GCSM President

Haleem KhanGeorgetown: As CARICOM-Cuba Day commences with plans of Economic and Trade Relations talks in Havana, Guyana will be sending representatives to further discuss various commitments and solutions, according to President of the Guyana Cuba Solidarity Movement (GCSM), Haleem Khan.

Khan noted that today’s (December 8) meeting will give the leaders an opportunity to look at the present situation with the Trade and Economic Agreement which the parties signed in 2000.

Chairman of CARICOM, Gaston Browne- Prime Minister of Antigua and Barbuda, Raoul Castro Ruz -President of Cuba, and Ambassador Irwin LaRocque – Secretary-General of CARICOM will address tomorrow’s opening ceremony at the Place of the Revolution.

The GCSM President explained that the Fifth Summit of the Heads of Government of the Caribbean Community (CARICOM) and Cuba will be about strengthening co-operation on many levels. One of the many topics includes the Climate Change Agreement and the upcoming negotiations on the United Nations Post 2015 Development Agenda.

In accordance with the Havana Declaration of December 2002, the Summit is held every three years on the date that the leaders of Barbados, Guyana, Jamaica and Trinidad and Tobago broke a diplomatic embargo and visited Cuba.

They will benefit from the result of discussions held last October in Havana by the CARICOM-Cuba Joint Commission which sought ways of making the Agreement more effective.

Khan explained that during the opening session of the Fifth Summit of the Americas in Trinidad in April 2009, US President Barack Obama had promised to end the 47-year old embargo, which the US held against the island.

The promise also included easing travel restrictions and allowing remittances to flow to Cuba.
