Caribbean must take charge of its destiny

Bridgetown.

The Caribbean must accept responsibility for its own destiny and stop relying on outside validation.

This is the advice of Jennifer Astaphan, Executive Director of the Caribbean Centre for Development Administration (CARICAD)..

In a brief address during  the launch of the Competency Standards for Youth Development Work in the Caribbean at the Accra Hotel yesterday, Astaphan said:

"Standards for the region can be taken to an international level, the point I am making is that we have an institution like CARICAD in existence for well over 30 year, yet we somtimes seem to look constantly for some kind of validation from outside", Astaphan said.

We boast 50 years of Independence in some of the countries of the region and yet we do not recognise that we have the competence and the ability to do the things that we need to do for our sustainable development", she added.
