Canal businessman robbed, shot

Dhaniram-Tirbeni-webGeorgetown: Bandits stormed the house of a Canal Number One businessman in the wee hours of Monday morning, waking him up with gun butts to the head before shooting him. The bandits robbed the family of jewellery and an undisclosed sum of cash. 

Injured is 36-year-old Dhaniram Tirbeni of lot 13 Studley Park, Canal #1, West Bank Demerara (WBD). He was rushed to a city hospital by relatives where he was admitted. This newspaper understands that he was shot once to the right hand and received cuts to the head from the beating. He is said to be in a stable condition. The family operates a grocery shop and is involved in the poultry business.

According to reports, the unmasked bandits gained access to the property at approximately 1:00hrs from the lower flat through a window that was pried open. Two of the four bandits then proceeded to the upper flat where four persons were asleep; the businessman and his wife in one room and their two children in another.

Tirbeni was then awakened by gun butts to the head and the bandits demanded cash and jewellery. He was then placed to kneel with his hands behind his head and shot. The bandits then ransacked the entire home before making good their escape.

Police found the businessman’s vehicle keys in a neighbour’s yard as investigations into the robbery are ongoing. Relatives said that Tirbeni and his wife are traumatized and are calling on police to bring the perpetrators to justice.
