Calgary University team to assist GPHC with Eco scans

Georgetown : A  thirteen member team arrived in Guyana from Calgary University and will be here until June 29, 2014. The team will be at the Georgetown Public Hospital Corporation (GPHC) performing echo scans.
Echocardiography is a non-invasive procedure that uses two and three-dimensional ultra sound to create images of the heart to diagnose heart diseases. It provides information such as the shape and size of the heart, the identification of damaged tissues and the pumping capacity. It can also detect normal and abnormal blood flow through the heart along with a lot of other information. The University of Calgary in collaboration with the Ministry of Health and the Government of Guyana established the Echocardiography Programme at the GPHC in 2012 and in 2013 extended it to the New Amsterdam and Linden Regional hospitals.
A team of cardiologists, headed by Professor, Debra Isaacs, Director of Cardiac transplant of the said University had visited Guyana in March. The five-member team focused on pediatric cardiac surgeries, and offered the capacity needed to conduct these surgeries locally.
