Budget debate begins today

British Virgin Islands: Debate on the 2012/2013 budget is to begin in the House of Assembly today, according to a BVInews.com report.

Premier and Minister for Finance, Dr. D. Orlando Smith, in January presented a budget of $287,472,000 for 2012. Projected expenditure was put at $258,472,000 and with an estimated surplus on operations of $29,000,000.

Following the presentation of the budget, members of the House were engaged in Standing Finance Committee deliberations that ended last week, the BVInews.com report said

At today’s sitting, Dr. Smith will lay the report on the Deliberations of the Standing Finance Committee on the table of the House. He will also lay on the table of the House the British Virgin Islands Financial Investigation Agency 2012 Draft Budget Estimates and Customs Department 2009 annual reports and the Minister of Health Ronnie Skelton will lay on the table of the House the HIV Aids Foundation 2008, 2009 and 2010 annual reports.

The BVInews.com report said that before debate on the budget begins, Dr. Smith will move a motion for the third reading on the merits and principles of the Bill entitled, Appropriation Act, 2012.

Also at today’s sitting, Government members will present three bills for their first readings.

The Minister of Education, Myron Walwyn, will move a motion for the first reading of the Bill entitled Recreation Trust Amendment Act, 2012 and the Attorney General will a motion for the First Reading of the Marriage Amendment Act, 2011 and the Disaster Management Act, 2011, the BVInews.com report said.
