President of Barbados Association of Medical Practitioners  (BAMP) Dr Carlos Chase  is calling for the evidence that  doctors are issuing fraudulent sick leave forms.

Speaking at a Barbados Employers’ Confederation (BEC) panel discussion on Sick Leave  The Employers Plight vs The Employees Right, yesterday  evening at the Lloyd Erskine Sandiford Centre, Chase said BAMP  was not aware of such behaviour but was willing to work with anyone who had evidence to the contrary.

“The allegation of doctors writing excessive, unnecessary or questionable sick leave certificates has been bandied about but there is no evidence of it. People say things, people whisper things but we have not seen evidence that ‘this sick certificate has come from Doctor X’, Chase said.

“We need concrete evidence; action against a doctor in this matter has to go through the regulatory body – the Barbados Medical Council – the disciplinary arm which in law controls all doctors,” he added.

On Wednesday, during a presentation at the BEC luncheon Minister of Industry Donville Inniss said that a select number of medical doctors were responsible for the majority of sick certificates issued in Barbados.

Calling it an "open secret" in some Inniss said the reported practice of physicians issuing sick leave without due cause cannot be ignored.
