Bina Hill training youths to be independent

Lethem : Indigenous youths are being trained at the Bina Hill Institute, North Rupununi, to become independent. The training would allow them to earn a living while they contribute to the development of their communities.

Principal of the Institute, Victor Ferreira said there were 49 youths from Regions One, Eight and Nine who are currently undergoing training in business administration, natural resources management, forestry, and agricultural science.

“We have some very enthused students here. This is the first time since I have been here in 2012, that I have seen this and I think its commendable to know that we have found where we want to go. We are moving in that direction for the first time in 3 years. I am happy to know we are putting things in place to ensure that the institute has sustainability,” the principal said.

This is the first time that the institute is being funded by the state. Prior to this, funding was secured through various projects and the North Rupununi District Development Board.

Students train at the institution for two years. They also receive hands on experience at places such as Rewa and Surama Eco Lodges and regional institutions

Vice President and Minister of Indigenous Peoples’ Affairs Sydney Allicock recently visited the institute and spoke to the students. “It is an important opportunity to be rounded, to be able to make a meaningful contribution to your various communities as young leaders as you are specialized in different areas.” Allicock told the students.

Bina Hill is located in close proximity to the Region 9 administrative centre, Lethem.
