Basil Williams appointed Deputy Speaker of National Assembly

Basil WilliamsGeorgetown: Chairman of the Peoples National Congress Reform (PNC/R) and A Partnership for National Unity (APNU) Shadow Legal Affairs Minister Basil Williams have been elected as Deputy Speaker of the National Assembly. He was nominated by Opposition Chief Whip Amna Ali. This was seconded by APNU MP Rupert Roopnarine.

Former Deputy Speaker of the National Assembly, Deborah Backer, after a prolonged silence of her health status and future in the House had reigned. Backer has missed a number of sittings of the National Assembly after she fell ill late last year and had to be hospitalized. She was subsequently flown to a Florida Hospital for further treatment.
Since Backer was first hospitalized in Guyana the family and party members have been tightlipped on her condition.

Backer is also a well known Attorney-at-Law. She obtained her Legal Education Certificate from the Hugh Wooding Law School in Trinidad in 1983 and a Bachelor of Law from the University of the West Indies in 1981. Backer is a member of the Central Executive Committee (CEC) and Vice-Chairman of the Peoples National Congress Reform. She has been a Parliamentarian since 1997 and had also served on the Georgetown City Council in 1994. Backer is also a serving member of a number of important organisations such as the Lions Club International and is currently an organising member of the Women’s Millennium Caucus.Deborah Backer
