Bartica will soon get renewable energy generation

Georgetown : Government in moving to create a ‘Green’ Guyana, a generation system that utilises renewable energy technology is closer to becoming a reality for Bartica, Region Seven.

The Ministry of Public Infrastructure is currently seeking proposals from appropriate firms to design and develop such a system, which uses an appropriate renewable energy technology or a combination of technologies. The system will be developed under a Build Own Operate and Transfer (BOOT) structure.  According to the ministry, this system will supply power to the Bartica grid under a negotiated and agreed Power Purchase Agreement (PPA).

In 2015, President David Granger launched Guyana’s ‘Green Revolution’ at Bartica, as the Head of State wants to make the community a model green town. The ‘Bartica Green Plan’ was introduced to the community in December. It is expected that by April 2016, short and long -term plans for transforming Bartica to the model green community will be made available.

The advancement of a renewable energy power generation system for the Bartica community that has already been gazetted as a town, fits into the entire structure of a green plan.

The green plan is part of the Coalition Government’s long-term advancement for the country that will reduce social inequalities and promote sustainable environmental practices.  Complementing the latter would be the advancement of sustainable exploitation of the country’s natural resources, and a programme each for solid waste disposal, and reforestation.

A green park comprising 10 acres of land is also being looked at for development. This will cater for WIFI, paved walkways alongside trees and the establishment of other recreational accommodation.

It is also expected that early this year, the ‘Bartica App’ will be officially launched. Feedback from residents will shape the ever evolving Bartica Green Plan.
