Barama to resume works shortly

East Bank Demerara: Laid off Barama workers will shortly be re-employed as the company is set to resume its plywood operations in June as scheduled. Agriculture Minister Robert Persaud today inspected the company’s factory at Land of Canaan, East Bank Demerara.

As the company moves to re-commence its operations to supply the local market by June, assurances were given by the company’s management that its export market will also be ready in December of this year.

Minister Persaud while addressing media operatives said that the company will be operating under new procedures, with respect to plywood production, and that he was happy to see that progress has been made.

The majority of the company’s upstream production will be done at its Buck Hall location, while the Land of Canaan factory will only be dealing with the downstream aspect (lighter side), of plywood manufacturing.

To ensure that transparency and openness is maintained, Government has commenced discussions with Barama’s management to re-visit the company’s original investment agreement.

According to Minister Persaud, these discussions which are expected to pave the way for changes in the company’s investment agreement will be finalized shortly. This will see the size of forestry areas; the type of operations; benefits and the type of royalty paid reviewed.
