Bandits escape with $15m worth of jewellery after robbing West Coast Berbice Jewellery Store

West Coast Berbice: Two armed bandits posing as customers this morning escaped with an estimated $15 million worth of gold and diamond jewellery from Ram’s Jewellery Store at Rosignol, West Coast Berbice .

Around 09:40hrs one of the men entered and left after enquiring about the price for a child’s ring.

Shortly after another man entered and bought a pair of stud earrings worth $500. The other man came back into the store and the two waited until another customer had left.

According to the owner, Chandrowtie Ram, she was packing jewellery into the showcases along with her son Bisham Govind Ram when she overheard one of the men speaking on his cell phone about "shooting".

The woman was later held at gunpoint by the same man that she overheard on the cell phone. According to Mrs.Ram, he instructed her to hand over everything, while the other bandit ran behind the counter and began throwing jewellery into a haversack he had with him. After spending about 15 minutes in the store, the men fled.
Local police visited the scene and conducted investigations minutes after the robbery. The bandits, however, are still at large.
