Bakr sent Back

Upon his arrival at the Norman Manley International airport, JAMAAT al Muslimeen leader Yasin Abu Bakr, accompanied by his son Fuad Abu Bakr and wife was denied entry into Jamaica.

The 73 year old Imam was intended to attend the commemoration of the Million Man March which is set to be held on Sunday 19th October at the National Arena in Kingston.

According to reports Bakr, his wife and son Fuad left Trinidad at 8am Wednesday morning and arrived in Jamaica at 1pm the same day; the trio was stopped by immigration officers and denied entry. After careful deliberations, the decision to deny entry for all three parties were revised and only Yasim Abu Bakr was denied entry due to firm instructions given to officers to prevent security breaches by allowing persons deemed as “undesirable” into the country.

When Bakr was informed of the officials’ decision to deny only him entry into the country, he began protesting and accusing immigration authorities of unjust treatment and targeting. When the conflict ensued immigration authorities notified on-duty police officers at the airport where they detained and handcuffed an upset Bakr.

Trinidad’s National Security Minister, Gary Griffith, said it was a matter of National Security and to ensure the safety of their citizens by protecting the country’s boarders. He also expressed that Jamaican immigration authorities decision to deny Bakr entry should not be questioned but accepted by all.
