Bahamas plane crash kills one, injures 10, including infant

A plane crash in Bahamian waters off the coast of New Providence claimed the life of a 77-year-old American and injured 10 other passengers.

The plane, a twin-engine Piper Navajo aircraft, crashed in waters off Clifton Pier in western New Providence around 8:30 a.m early Tuesday.

Authorities at the scene confirmed that 11 people were onboard the aircraft and according to a Reuters report “the plane, operated by Ferguson Air, may have lost an engine”.

Bahamas police indicated that the pilot notified air traffic controllers that he was experiencing difficulties before bringing the plane down on a area of water in the Clifton Pier area, just short of the Lynden Pindling International Airport.

Reuters said “the 10 survivors, six Americans and four Bahamians, were rescued by staff from a nearby diving business and taken by ambulance to hospital in Nassau”.

The crash is the second fatal plane incident in a month in the Bahamas.

Last month, the prominent pastor, Dr. Myles Munroe and his wife Ruth along with eight others died in an accident believed to have been caused by poor weather conditions.

Munroe was traveling to Grand Bahama to attend the 2014 Global Leadership Forum that he organized.

As the pilot attempted to land in Freeport, the aircraft hit a dockyard crane, causing it to crash into a garbage dump, killing everyone on board.
