Automatic Weather Station commissioned at Canal no.1

West Bank Demerara : The Ministry of Agriculture launched one of 10 Automatic Weather Stations (AWS) last evening at Canal Number one, to support the country’s effort against climate change.
The network of systems will assist the country’s hydro-meteorological service in providing medium to long-term weather and climate forecast.

This project is between the Government of Guyana and the Caribbean Community Climate Change Centre (CCCCC) at the cost of US$30,000 with the support of funding received from Greece and, the European Union (EU.)

Minister of Agriculture Dr. Leslie Ramsammy said in the fight against climate change, the launch of the AWS is a “small celebratory step that has major consequences and major impact for Guyana.”
He said the installation of the system and the others to follow will allow for the boosting of the competence of the hydro-metrological office in Guyana.
Minister Ramsammy said the AWS takes the “guess work out of agriculture” and allow the professionals to share with the relevant stakeholders informed information. In this respect, he endorsed the work of the CCCCC and said that all Caribbean countries should champion the centre’s cause.
CCCCC was established in July 2005 with the mandate of coordinating the regional response to climate change and its effort to manage and adapt to its projected impacts.
