Arthur accuused Government of playing political football

Bridgetown.

Leader of the Opposition Owen Arthur last night accused the Government of playing political football by naming a football tournament after the late Prime Minister David Thompson.

Speaking before a sizeable crowd at the unchallenged nomination of St Michael North East Member of Parliament Mia Mottley held at Tyrol Cot, Codrington Hill, St Michael, Arthur said the tournament should have been named after Victor Clarke or Regge Haynes two former outstanding national players.

"At this time when Barbados should be opening sports like the rest of the world as an avenue for professional development for our young and to give them careers, what is the Democratic Labour Party doing? They are seeking to use sports for the purposes of their own political development  and it is wrong", Arthur said.

"If there is to be a football memorial tournament in this country, name it after a footballer who has done something to carry forward football in Barbados, not Thompson , he never played cricket or football", he added.
