APNU+AFC Coalition projected to win elections

d901afec-f380-4cd9-bd6e-0b27370b867aGeorgetown: From the statements of poll and what both major political parties already know statistical reports suggest that the APNU+AFC Coalition will form the new government in Guyana.

Officially the Guyana Elections Commission (GECOM) has put out its first preliminary results that already indicate a trend that the Coalition has developed early lead.

Tuesday afternoon the APNU+AFC Coalition issued a statement saying it “has been tabulating the statements of polls coming into our operations centre. The results show (with 88% of the votes) that, in what were formerly PPP/C strong-holds in the Essequibo Islands-West Demerara Region, Region No.3; Mahaica-Berbice Region, Region No. 5; and the East Berbice-Corentyne Region, Region No.6, the Coalition has made significant inroads.

In the Demerara–Mahaica Region, Region No. 4 and the Upper Demerara-Berbice Region, Region No. 10, the APNU+AFC Coalition has improved its performance from 2011.

At the present time May 12, 2015 with 2,025 Statement of Polls counted (or 88%), the APNU+AFC has 182,176 votes, while the PPP/C has 157,947 a variance of 24,229 votes

The APNU+AFC Coalition, therefore, after careful examination of the results can be seen to have a commanding lead in the polls.

APNU+AFC urged its supporters to remain calm as the official announcement of the results of the elections is awaited”.

Meanwhile, the PPP has signaled its intention to ask for recounts in all 10 electoral districts, a move that could potentially delay the announcement of official results and the declaration of a winner.

The Attorney General (AG) Anil Nandlall has stated that the party “is not preparing anything to go to Court.” The party’s General Secretary had hinted even before polling day that should the party feel cheated they had the right to take the matter to court to withhold the declaration of the winner.

To this, the former AG noted, “we have not reached that stage; we have not looked at that as an option because it is unnecessary at this stage.” He said however, that “a billion” things can occur that could eventually force the party to take that legal route; but refused to highlight any.
