Georgetown : The main opposition group A Partnership for National Unity (APNU) says the partnership remains committed to ensuring that the people of Guyana get a strong and enforceable Anti-Money Laundering and Countering the Financing of Terrorism Bill. Contrary to recent pronouncements by his Excellency the President Donald Ramotar nothing was offered to the combined opposition, when he met with the Opposition Leader David Granger recently. The party sites that despite having on his desk (for over eight months) the combined opposition’s pre-conditions for passage of the legislation, the President made it clear that there would be no nexus between those conditions and the passage of the AML-CFT amendment bill.
The meeting which was held on the 18th June 2014 was requested by Leader of the Opposition Brigadier David Granger. The Opposition was encouraged by the language emanating from the Office of the President that their might some concessions. However it was clear when the two sides met that the President was not willing to negotiate and definitely was not in a conciliatory mood.
APNU says the PPP-C is not interested in giving the people of Guyana the strong and enforceable money-laundering legislation that they deserve. Instead the PPP/C has decided to use this situation and any concomitant events to achieve its narrow political objectives.
